International Youth Day: Youth Building Peace

Since 2000, each year on 12 August, the world is observing the International Youth Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly. This year’s celebration is dedicated to young people’s contributions to conflict prevention and transformation, as well as inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace.

As the organization with its crucial aim in fostering reconciliation and constructive approaches to remembrance, RYCO’s contribution in upcoming processes is perceived through the promotion of diversity and democratic values above all which will establish new relations amongst young people in the Western Balkan region. The important dimension is the enhancement of sustainable regional cooperation amongst youth.

In addition, promoting intercultural learning, and increasing regional mobility will engrave European spirit of cooperation, understanding, and tolerance between young people. It will definitely serve as a solid ground for their participation in decision-making processes.

Bearing in mind its unique mission, vision and mandate, on this occasion RYCO proudly wishes happy International Youth Day to the youth of the Western Balkans.

RYCO invites the youth of the Western Balkans to bring their ideas which aim to promote cooperation, reconciliation and mutual understanding in the region through youth exchanges and intercultural learning and to participate in the first RYCO Open Call which will be launched in October 2017. More information on the call shall be available soon on RYCO website (www.rycowb.org) and social media profiles on Facebook and Twitter.

On the International Youth Day

On 17 December 1999, in its resolution 54/120, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development committed to fostering peaceful and inclusive societies and affirmed that “Sustainable development cannot be realized without peace and security”. Goal 16 aims to ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels. The World Programme of Action for Youth, which provides a policy framework and practical guidelines to improve the situation of young people, also encourages “promoting the active involvement of youth in maintaining peace and security”.
