Peace Day: Youth Empowerment and Peacebuilding

WESTERN BALKANS – On September 21st, the world unites to celebrate the International Day of Peace, established by the United Nations to strengthen the ideals of harmony among all nations and peoples. This year’s theme, “Cultivating a Culture of Peace,” emphasizes that peace is not just the absence of conflict but a dynamic process requiring continuous effort and participation from every level of society.

In the Western Balkans, a region with a rich yet complex history, the pursuit of peace holds profound significance. Recognizing this, Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO) is dedicated to empowering youth as catalysts for positive change.

“Recognizing the indispensable role of youth in peacebuilding processes, RYCO is committed to ensuring their meaningful participation by being policy influencer and supporter of youth actions that bring change in their communities. By supporting and involving young changemakers, RYCO not only amplifies their voices but also infuses peace and reconciliation efforts with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. In this way we ensure sustainability of peace initiatives in the long term,” stated RYCO Secretary General Albert Hani on the occasion of International Peace Day.

RYCO believes that peace must be in the minds of individuals, especially the young. By fostering dialogue, understanding, and cooperation, the organization works tirelessly to build bridges between communities. Through meaningful exchanges, youth from different backgrounds come together to share experiences, learn from one another, and build lasting friendships.

Young people across the Western Balkans are engaging in projects that promote reconciliation and mutual respect. Whether it’s students collaborating on intercultural initiatives, young artists expressing visions of unity through their creations, or aspiring journalists promoting narratives of peace, the impact is tangible. These efforts not only enrich their personal growth but also contribute to a more harmonious society.

As the world observes the International Day of Peace, RYCO extends an invitation to individuals, organizations, and governments across the Western Balkans and beyond to join in the collective effort of building a future anchored in tolerance, trust, and respect..

Celebrate the International Day of Peace with RYCO. Together, we can cultivate a culture of peace that transcends  generations.
