RYCO has been awarded a formal commendation by the Ambassador of Japan to Albania, H.E. KATO Kikuko, marking a significant milestone in the seven-year partnership that has strengthened dialogue, cultural exchange, and youth empowerment across the Western Balkans.
The recognition reflects the long-standing cooperation between RYCO and the Government of Japan through the MIRAI Program—an initiative that, since 2018, has introduced young people from the Western Balkans to Japan’s culture, diplomacy, and peacebuilding legacy. The program continues to grow in reach and impact: in 2025 alone, 1,223 young people applied, demonstrating the strong demand for opportunities that foster intercultural understanding and leadership development.
To date, over 68 youth from the region have traveled to Tokyo, Hiroshima, and other Japanese cities, returning as ambassadors of dialogue, reconciliation, and community engagement. Their stories continue to shape a new generation of leaders committed to cooperation within and beyond the Western Balkans.
Building on this success, RYCO and the Government of Japan announced the new MIRAI 2025–2026 cohort, consisting of 13 outstanding young participants from across the WB6. Selected for their leadership potential, commitment to regional cooperation, and engagement in youth initiatives, the cohort will travel to Japan in February 2026. Their study visit will include immersive cultural activities, institutional meetings, lectures on Japan’s foreign policy, and exchanges with Japanese youth and experts.
RYCO expressed deep gratitude for Japan’s continued trust and support.
“This commendation symbolizes not only recognition of our past work, but also a renewed commitment to building bridges between our regions” – RYCO Secretary General stated.
