RYCO Local Branch Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in collaboration with Deutsche Welle, hosted an inspiring RYCO Youth Talk on “Solution-Oriented Journalism and Constructive Journalism.” The event took place at the Goethe-Institut Sarajevo on 1st October, providing a platform for a lively discussion on essential journalistic concepts that transcend the traditional focus on problems.
The panel featured prominent experts from Deutsche Welle: Mrs. Manuela Kaspar-Claridge, Editor-in-Chief, and Mrs. Adelheid Feilcke, Director of Programs for Europe. Joining them were esteemed media professionals from Bosnia and Herzegovina: Mrs. Maida Muminović, Executive Director of the Media Center Sarajevo, and Mr. Enes Hodžić, Journalist at BIRN BiH.
The discussion centered on the importance of Solution-Oriented and Constructive Journalism, which emphasizes not only reporting on issues but also offering potential solutions and highlighting progress. This approach empowers audiences, fostering a sense of hope and encouraging action rather than leaving people feeling helpless.
Throughout the evening, young participants engaged directly with the panelists, exploring how these journalistic approaches contribute to building a more informed and engaged society. Panelists agreed that Solution-Oriented and Constructive Journalism promotes constructive dialogue, drives positive change, and serves as a catalyst for social improvement.
The event also provided actionable advice for young people on how they can support and engage with these forward-thinking journalism practices:
- Instead of passively consuming news, young people were encouraged to actively look for stories that focus on solutions and progress, helping them develop a balanced worldview and inspire similar efforts.
- Sharing solution-focused articles on social media or discussing them with peers can help shift the media narrative towards one that fosters hope and inspires action.
- Whether through school projects, blogging, or internships, young people can support Solution-Oriented Journalism by telling stories that focus on solutions, inspiring others and contributing to a more constructive media landscape.
- Constructive journalism often highlights community-driven solutions. By participating in local initiatives, young people can contribute to the kinds of stories that constructive journalists cover, building a culture of active problem-solving.
The RYCO Youth Talk successfully highlighted the importance of Solution-Oriented and Constructive Journalism, showing young people how they can become active participants in shaping a more positive and engaged media landscape. An opportunity for this kind of engagement in the media is definitely the initiative that RYCO is implementing with Deutsche Welle – Peace Broadcasters, and whose participation you can apply for until October 9.
