This week, the ethno-village Stanišić welcomed around fifty young people aged 17 to 24 from the Western Balkans. The youth participated in a camp jointly organized by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, forumZFD, and the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO), with support from the German Government and the European Union.
During the four days, young participants had the opportunity to learn more about gender equality, peacebuilding, discuss the challenges their communities face, and learn how to develop ideas that can bring positive changes. Workshops were designed to encourage interactive participation through group work, debates, simulations, and creative projects. Through these activities, participants gained invaluable experience in collaboration, understanding different perspectives, and problem-solving. Participants also had the chance to learn about best practices from other parts of the region and exchange ideas that will help them become agents of change in their communities.
Participants from Bijeljina took away not only new knowledge and skills but also new friendships, which is one of the most important aspects of this camp. These connections are crucial for strengthening regional cooperation and understanding and vital for the future of the Western Balkans.
Participant feedback confirms that this camp has big potential to contribute to peacebuilding and a better future. For Bojana (19) from Kičevo, North Macedonia, the camp was a fantastic experience: “We had a great time, but we also learned a lot. I would recommend everyone who has the opportunity to apply for such camps, to do it without hesitation.” As Bojana emphasized, this experience was not only educational but also very inspiring.
Following camp’s first- edition, that took place last year in Mavrovo, North Macedonia, this year’s camp in Bijeljina represents a continuation of efforts that RYCO, together with its partners, dedicates to youth empowerment and dialogue encouragement in order to further enhance and strengthen regional cooperation and contribute to peace and reconciliation in the Western Balkans region.
